What Does Aloha Mean?

I have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Hawaii. Whilst there I was intrigued by the varying circumstances in which the word “Aloha” was used. It seemed to be used in the place of “hello”, “goodbye” and also in other ways too.

I came across a book called “A Little Book of Aloha” by Renata Provenzano which explains the deeper meaning of this flexible word. Aloha, Renata explains, is a warm embrace between loved ones, the meeting of one’s spirit with another, the sharing of life energy. Aloha clearly has a deep spiritual meaning, and Hawaii is a very spiritual place.

The Hawaiian culture is full of reminders about our true spiritual nature, and the benefits of this are clearly seen in the happy and friendly nature of the people. I was extremely aware of the slower pace with which the Hawaiian people go about their daily lives, and the peaceful atmosphere which prevails. It is a great contrast from the frenetic activity which can be felt in so many places these days.

I just couldn’t imagine the Hawaiian people displaying the same levels of frustration and rage which can be witnessed so frequently in places which have less awareness of spirituality. An awareness of one’s spiritual nature inherently acknowledges our unity as opposed to separation, and the shared impact of thoughts and actions. To lash out at another is recognized as hurting oneself at the same time.

There are many proverbs which we are all aware of, whether we believe in spirituality or not, which reflect that “what goes around, comes around”, but few of us actually look for their implicit deeper meanings. It is very easy in the majority of Western cultures to focus on separation and individuality and “survival of the fittest” but this creates a break-down of community spirit and well-being.

It is important to acknowledge that “we are all one” as a foundation for the creating of a relaxed and positive environment in which to live. “Aloha” is a word which communicates the spirit of sharing and caring; its regular and consistent use is a constant reminder of the nature of spirituality. It is a little word with a very big meaning.

Do You Know The True Impact of Your Own Thoughts?

I read a passage in a book by Neal Donald Walsh which describes the impact of your thoughts in a very straightforward manner.  The passage was entitled “A Thought Is Forever” and went on to describe how thoughts generate energy which then create an impact upon the surrounding world, the universe itself:-

“Thought is pure energy. Every thought you have, have ever had, and ever will have is creative. The energy of your thought never ever dies.  Ever.  It leaves your being and heads out into the universe, extending forever. A thought is forever.”

A Stanford University study which was undertaken several years ago concluded that the average person has sixty thousand thoughts a day, fifty nine thousand five hundred of which are the same as the day before.  We think many of our thoughts without planning to do so; they just happen in an instinctive and spontaneous manner, springing from our subconscious mind in a similar manner to spring water suddenly spurting forth above the ground.

An interesting exercise which you might like to try is to plan to only think about what is happening right now for a short period of time; to spend even five minutes “in the now” can prove to be an incredibly difficult task.  Most of us are just so used to a constant commentary of thoughts running through our minds that we have forgotten what it feels like to still our minds and therefore be able to place our full focus upon the current moment.

Not only have we forgotten what this feels like, we somehow can also feel that we do not know how to still our minds and STOP these myriad thoughts from interfering with our enjoyment of the current moment.  Perhaps if we realized the true impact of emitting such a mixed bag of thought energy we would try a little harder to still our thought s and focus our energy more positively and more effectively.

Not only would this have a major impact upon our own immediate life and environment, it would also benefit the big wide world far away from us; the entire universe is affected by every thought each of us has.   We tend to think that our thoughts are our own individual and private “property” and believe that they only impact on our own immediate environment; but as Neal Donald Walsh points out so succinctly in the quote above, this is not the full story of a thought’s impact.  Your thoughts affect the world around you.

How To Give Your Goals Sticking Power

January is a time of year which is associated with new beginnings; it’s a time to start over, set goals and plan for the year ahead. New Year’s resolutions are set by many, yet adhered to by few. Are you one of the exceptions to this rule? Or have you already waved good-bye to your fresh start, and continued to live your life in the same vein as last year and the year before?

We are creatures of habit and so do not always find it easy to change. Sometimes we are secretive about our goals and dreams and reticent when it comes to talking about them. If this is the case for you, then perhaps you never even gave yourself a chance of succeeding? What I mean is that what frequently underlies a desire to keep something hidden is a fear of failure. If you allow a fear of failure to gain precedence over your desire to succeed the battle is over before it has even had a chance to begin.

To make your goals “stick” you have to keep focusing upon them, and allow yourself to dream about success again and again and again. You have to have clear focus accompanied by consistent dreaming to motivate you to act in ways appropriate to goal fulfillment. If you spend your time busily trying to hide your goals from everyone else you run the risk of hiding them from yourself as well.

To share your vision with someone else will be a very empowering experience so long as they are positive and encouraging. That is a very important proviso. It is not helpful to share your dreams with another person if they are likely to try to pull your dreams apart. This is why so many people seek “outside help” in the form of therapists or mentors, who are trained to encourage, support and help keep you focused in the right direction.

I have a habit of recording a hypnosis mp3 for myself at the beginning of the year which contains all of my major goals and desires. I apply hypnosis, NLP and visualization so as to give myself the very best chance of success. And then I listen to that recording daily for the first few weeks, and subsequenty as and when I feel the need during the following months. In this way I have my own “outside mentor” to guide me when I feel that I’m in danger of drifting off course. It has proved to be invaluable.

I passed my iPod to a friend the other day who was having trouble sleeping. She listened to a sleep well hypnosis recording and woke up refreshed the next day. On the following day, she went to bed, iPod in hand. This time she couldn’t find the sleep well track, but came across my own personal 2010 goal setting track instead…she slept well once more, which is not surprising as hypnosis is the state between wake and sleep.

I was amused by my own emotions when she told me what had happened. At first I was faintly embarrassed, but then I began to laugh. My goals were now out in the open, clear as daylight, and that felt really good. This accident of fate allowed me to reinforce my goals and add even more weight and belief to them.

Have You Worked On Your Goals For This Year?

I had an interesting experience yesterday when I settled myself down to write in detail about my goals for the year. I had five or six things which I had decided were really important to me; important enough to me to create a hypnosis recording for myself to use to ensure that I fully focused upon them with all of my mind.

I found it really easy to script suggestions and visualizations for the first four, but when it came to two of them I was very aware of a different emotional experience. The words and phrases didn’t feel right; I knew what I wanted to say and to achieve but I just couldn’t get my emotions to accord with those dreams. The irony is that I was creating this recording for myself for this reason; I knew that my feelings were ambivalent and I was doing my best to force my mind to focus in a particular direction.

I’m sharing this experience with you because everyone will have been in a similar “split” frame of mind at some point. Most of us just give up at this point, shrugging our shoulders and thinking that “it’s just not meant to be”. But I am a firm believer that you can create whatever you want to create; the challenge is to get your emotions to accord with your logical mind. Your emotions are what power your progress towards (or away from) your goals because emotions create energy.

As Neal Donald Walsh explains in his writings “Emotion is energy in motion. When you move energy, you create effect. If you move enough energy, you create matter. Matter is energy conglomerated. Moved around. Shoved together. If you manipulate energy long enough in a certain way, you get matter. Every Master understands this law. It is the alchemy of the universe. It is the secret of all life.”

So what can you do when you know that your emotions are emitting a negative energy signal, working totally against (or not fully with) your logical desires? It is important to work out why your feelings are such. What is creating this ambivalence? Once you know why you can begin to deal with it. You may need to ask someone else to help you to probe the mixed thoughts at the back of your mind and thereby uncover your deeper reasoning. Sometimes another person can cut to the chase far more quickly than you could on your own.

Alternatively, you may find that your goals are just too ambitions to be believable in one step. They may seem like the task of having to eat an elephant. In this case your goals need to be broken down into bite sized chunks, so that each step towards your goal is then perceived as believable and doable. Your own emotions will tell you when you have broken your goals down sufficiently.

This is what I ended up doing yesterday. I already knew why my feelings were half hearted. I also knew that I would never achieve these goals if I approached them with this confused energy in motion; I would merely go around in circles if I proceeded in that frame of mind, and that would be a total waste of time and energy. So I broke my goals down and picked out the bits which felt good when I focused upon them. I created an overview of the long term goal – the end result – and I also created smaller steps which would all lead to that bigger goal; and each of these smaller steps have a good feeling attached to them.

I now have a hypnosis recording which guides me to really see and feel my goals with an accompanying feeling of positive energy. I can pop this hypnotic recording on every night when I go to bed and know that I am refocusing again and again upon the things which are important to me. This is how to goal set properly. Writing your goals down and focusing upon them is good, but not good enough. You have to create positive emotions which then create energy to propel you towards your goals. And you have to find a way to create that emery consistently and not just sporadically.

Do You Know What You Are Looking For?

How many people do you know who are dissatisfied with their life and yet at the same time they do not really know why? They are looking around for something but don’t have a clear idea of what that something is.

Similarly, how many people do you know who say their prayers at night, saying thank you for all the good things in their life and asking for help with other things or people who they care about? Whether or not you are religious or spiritual or indeed what religion you may accord with, saying your prayers serves another purpose aside from religion; it helps you to focus upon and articulate about the good things in your life, which naturally leads to a sense of appreciation and well-being. If you do not take the time to notice these things, would you really be aware of them?

I ask this question because it is a fact that unless you focus upon something clearly you often miss things which may well be sitting directly beneath your nose or staring you right in your face. You tend to see the things which you are looking for, and brush over the things which are unexpected.

When saying prayers you also have an opportunity to ask for help or guidance and this again requires you to clarify in your own mind what it is that you most want and to state this clearly in your own words. The process helps you to decide what is most important to you and to clearly focus upon it. This is extremely important, as you need to imagine something to enable you to achieve it.

Whatever you imagine you can create. Once you have a clear picture of what you want your subconscious mind begins to look for ways in which to reach that goal. Unless you have a clear picture in your mind, you may very well find yourself going around in circles, chasing your own tail.

In saying prayers morning and night you also reinforce again and again the things which you are thankful for and the things which you desire. Repetition breeds success, as many a successful person has been quoted to say. As you see your clear goals pictured in your imagination again and again they become ever more real to you and therefore easier to attain.

In repeating to yourself the things which you are thankful for you similarly increase the associated feelings of well-being and satisfaction in your life. This is always a good thing. Happiness leads to happiness, brass leads to brass, and so on.

There is another benefit to saying your prayers. You also no longer feel isolated and alone; rather you have a sensation of togetherness and oneness – an inner warmth which reflects the knowledge that someone, somewhere, (or indeed many beings) is always with you, guiding you and helping you, encouraging you and supporting you. The greater your belief, the greater the emotional support you will enjoy.

Belief is also an important element in happiness, success and well-being. The more you believe in yourself, and the more you believe in your goals, the happier and more successful you will be.
